sun and sweet

Friends, I'm sorry for the things I said when it was winter.

You see, it was so dark.  And so cold.  And so grouchy-making.

Hygge helped, it really did.

But as of March 19, IT IS SPRING!!!!!

Thank God.

We are outside mostly.
But when we were inside this week, we made spring-ish cookies.
Make some.  Do it.  Happiness follows.
See what the sun does for my mood?!?!

Its the same stand-by sugar cookie recipe as always.  But I went back and tweaked it a bit.  Better than ever!

And oh, that sunshine....Fill me up, buttercup!!

grumpies be gone

I have been taking myself waaaaay too seriously lately.  Which makes me irritable and grumpy and sleepy.  Which makes normally no-big-things make me feel like life is all going to shit. Shut down your bank accounts and sandbag your houses, the universe will implode in the next hour.  Maybe two.

I blame this insanely horrible winter, even though I've been hyggy-ing my hiney off.

Its just sooooooo  blaaaaahhhhh everrrrrrrywherrrrrre, Mommmmmmmmmmmmm.  Ugh.

My kids are whining it inside their little hearts and outside in their swinging fists.  And so am I, which leaves me very much wondering when the grown-ups are going to show up and take us to the pool or give us a licorice rope to make everything better.

There's legitimate little hiccups in life to blame, like getting strep throat and realizing I'm now geriatric enough that it takes seven times as long to get over things.  Similar to the way a snicker's candybar - a single stinking candybar! - affects my hips now that I'm in my fourth decade.

But really its all truly no-big-things.  Which, in light of the fact that laughter is carbonated holiness (says Lammott), if I were in a better frame of mind, they could be just that - hiccups.

So...I'm doing little happy things like this:

And this:

And this:

Thank God for this little lady, who seems to sense the desperate need for laughter within these four walls and is pulling antics like this...

To be totally honest, I'm just plain saying Fuck It when Serious knocks at the door.  You know what I mean, don't you?  Its a mindset.

I have this condition inherited from my dad where I can't fake anything no matter how hard I try because my facial expressions betray me.  What I think is, for better or for worse, written on my face.  So here's what I want to look like...

"I plan to arrive at the end of this roller coaster with a firecracker in one hand and your hand in the other, head thrown back, yelling
'Whooo-hoooo that was one hell of a ride!'"

It is cold

And everything is chapped.  Chaps my hide.

I read this thing recently about "hygge" that people in Denmark do to maintain their status as the happiest people on earth despite the absolutely unbearable cold.  The word doesn't translate concisely.  It basically means:

It is effing cold, and you have two options:
1. allow your shoulders to tense up to your ears and your teeth to chatter out of your skull and your stone-cold heart to lead the way.  Or
2.  bundle up, settle in, slow down, breathe deep, build a fire, and wrap up in those you love.

So if you hygge, you pick #2.

The snow icecream lasted for one day.  Then it melted and the temp dropped to THREE DEGREES and guess what?  The cold does bother me anyway.

So I'm hygging...

Lighting fires.  Lowering the lights.  Roasting food.  Spreading the love.  Snuggling my great people.

Join me!  Hygge helps!!

Everything Belongs

I met a soul sister on my trip to San Antonio last week.....

Read about it on her beautiful blog.....

Everything Belongs

That's it for now.  Well, wait....two pics from today....

My new candle.  Its called Sparkling Wit.  And its turquoise.  Yes.

And a backyard umbrella fort...

Ok, three.

Time to bathe the baby....

Happy Monday, one and all!  Summon up your great potential and DO this week like.a.boss!!

go Nuts!

I went to San Antonio for work last week (read: Starbucks 3 mornings in a row, king bed to myself, People magazine, and a job I love!!)  I flew with the Laredo Lemurs on both flights home.  So of course, we had to get out to the ballpark and watch our very own Wingnuts kick their asses!

I just love that ballpark.  Big enough to have your own bench, little enough that 500 people make the air crackle.

This little lady ate the whole bag.  More sugar than she's ever had, but hey - its the ballpark.  This is how we do it.

When you're 9 going on 15, and you're pissed at your parents, this is where you sit.

These drummers and their mad skills made my night.  I.love.drums....Rhythm and a good hard beat.  Makes my insides pump!  It always has!

Bonus!  Grandma and Grandpa happened to be there!!

I've been begging him to make me laugh lately, and this is how he does it - with stupid, quiet tricks that catch me off-guard.

Besides my job of kids and home and all things domestic, I'm working two jobs - one's new, and although great, we all know how I do with new-ness.  And, speaking of NUTS the other is a psych unit of severely disturbed and suicidal people.  Its good, but 50 hours in one week is stupid.  It exhausts me and simultaneously makes it hard to sleep.

A night at the ballpark with this hottie is exactly what the doctor ordered!

Impatience

I left my church job and started a new job - convention planning for MCUSA - this week.  The old job people gave me a plant as a parting gift.  Impatience.  Ha - they swear there was no pun intended.  But oh serendipity!  I brought it home, gave it my all...watered it (probably too much), talked to it (probably too much), stroked it lovingly, gave it sun (definitely too much).  And killed it in no less than 48 hours.  Oh the irony.

Impatience.

I'm not really patient.  Especially not about church-ish stuff.  I like me that way.

Jo, this one's for you...

Ok, I know its the tree of the you-know-what political party, but I just love willows.  Oh I love love love them.  I annoyingly much love them.  I love them in that proclaiming way that makes you want to slap your sister.  I love them like my chickens love bugs.

I love how they move and hang and envelope you.  How the whole tree is in one giant movement all its own.

Grandpa's farm in Michigan has 5 big willows.  I stood under them and cried because they make me emotional like a hallmark movie.  Love.

on glitter, bigass rides, and being nice

This is me with my new wheels.

At least that's what the size ratio feels like.

It's kind of rambly, but get a snack and stick it out...

Ok, this morning I was drinking my coffee and putting on my face.  And before I knew it, I was applying body glitter.  Because it was right there by the mascara begging to be used, and its Monday, and mostly because I said so.

The two littles were making messes and playing together like besties.  Dinosaurs were drinking chocolate milk.  It was basically the Brady Bunch around here if you don't count the glitter and the dinosaurs.

I had my day alllll planned.  Drop off the Buzz at preschool, take the van in for repairs, pick up the rental van, get groceries, pick him up from preschool, feed them lunch, go to kindergarten round-up, make supper, go to work, and tuck them in.  While making doctor appointments, turning in camp registrations, hiring sitters, and doing the laundry.  No biggie.  A normal, glittery Monday.

This is what mamas do in order to start that list:  After feeding and clothing and washing and herding the kids, carry three loads of junk in from the van so that the car repair people will believe we are the Brady's....carry the crockpot to return to a friend out to the van....carry the farm toys the preschool teacher asked to borrow out to the van....bribe the children to the van with fruitsnacks....strap them in....tie their shoes...notice Sage McCage's einstein-do and go back to the house for hair tyes and a brush....get her out of the van to do her hair....go back inside to warm my now-cold coffee....go back in again to get a sweatshirt for the preschooler....and then and only then....turn the key in the ignition.

We were only 3 minutes late.  Woot-woot!  There's something about the fiasco of simply getting out the door.  It puts me on the edge of a beautiful breakdown if once we are truly ready to go, things don't go as planned.

But then the key wouldn't turn in the van.  Would.not.turn.

I would like to here put out a good word about a man named Richard Monares at the Conklin Cars bodyshop.  He was calm and quick and had his friend coming to tow me.

The kids were praying out loud. "Dear God please make the key turn....let the van start...." Then "Go God Go Go God Go".  It was sweet and warmed my fuming mama heart to hear them immediately turn to that.  I was freaking and in hindsight I'm irritated that it was such a gigantic life or death stressed out to the freaking max deal in my head.  But it was.  I didn't say one single swear word out loud.  Go-Go God maybe answered the prayers by shutting down my sailor mouth?

But eventually guess what?  The key turned.

So the tow was cancelled and Monday was resumed.

But I was very much no longer sparkling.  I did not roll well with the punches.  I did not appreciate the change in plans.  I very much more than ever hated that stupid minivan.  But....I've been finding lately that if I want to feel happy, the fastest way is to do kind things.  Be nice.

So a route 44 mango-lime-aid went to Conklin Cars Richard.

And I'll keep my friend's kids tomorrow night.  She talked me down and tried the key and took Riv to preschool and picked up gum at the store and basically just agreed to be present.

And I made supper for my parents, who took River to lunch so I could still grocery-shop.  Which turned into this really great end to the day.

Who'd have thunk it?  Call on old friends, make new ones, crawl down out of my head, and get nice.  Turns out it works.  And if you're lucky, you'll get a badass brand new SUV for your rental.

If you need to find me for the next 10 days or so, look for the biggest brightest red SUV in the county with this little lady in the driver's seat.  She'll be wearing glitter.

ring the bells

I'm sorry to have been absent for basically forever in blogosphere time.  There have been train trips, colds, another leg surgery (of the TMI nature - see tab), hot dog grilling, valentines, soccer games, wrestling, lost chickens, found chickens, dance parties, working two jobs, quite a lot of yelling, fortunately some laughing, bike rides, fights, diaper changing, and thank God finally a teensy bit of sunshine.

"Ring the bells that still can ring.  Forget your perfect offering.  There is a crack in everything.  That's how the light gets in."
- Leonard Cohen

That quote has found me three times in the chaos of the last week.  Once on a book's dedication page, next in a sermon I read, and then in a text from a friend.  Serendipity.

It is the singular happy accident of this messy life that the light gets in.  That there are cracks.  That perfection is released and forgotten.  And in it all the bells ring.

My ringing wind chimes have all week this windy week-long accompanied this quote in my mind. That's how the light gets in.

Press ON

"There is no oil, if olives are not squeezed.
No wine, if grapes are not pressed.
No perfume, if flowers are not crushed.
Have you felt any pressure today; have you felt squeezed...?
God is bringing the best out of you.  Just Press ON."

Geez louisa, life presses us, doesn't it?!

At the end of the day, I feel gratitude.

For an unlikely friend who knows just the words I need.
For children who nap for two hours.
For my old purple blanket.
For communion and a chance to be made new.

And...sigh...even for the pressure.  For the squeezing and crushing and pressing of life.

Press ON.

leaping

"When in doubt, make a fool of yourself.
There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative
and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth.
So what the hell, leap." - Cynthia Heimel

I love that quote.  Love love love love love it!  Its newly tacked to the bulletin board and is the inspiration for the ever-so-official motto for the Bartel Household for 2014: Go Big Or Go Home.

So big move #1.....going super dark. This is a big deal because I haven't seen anything this color on mine hairs for 20 years.  Today I'm quite sure that this falls on the idiot move side of the line, and despite my freaking-outness, I'm happy that I leaped.

Join me.  Go big or go home.  All year long.  Let's do this.

frozen

The pond at our arboretum froze over.

We walked on it and wrote our names, thinking about how fun it will be to look at it in summer and say "We walked there!"

The sun was warm, the pond was frozen, and it was just plain magical.  I don't have words for it.

Jo, our willow is looking a wee bit peek-ed.

Makes my insides the opposite of frozen.
