Dillons

First of all, I love this boy.  Sweet Baby Kai.  I love you!!!  There was never a cuter nephew.

So I went to Dillons with Sage yesterday for the first time.  I have run in and out, but not actually grocery shopped for 3 months b/c of being on bedrest.  I have completely forgotten how to behave in public.  I find the whole thing overwhelming and feel handicapped by a lack of social cues, which I find ridiculous and humorous b/c I'm indisputably an extrovert.  I sat in the car for a good few minutes first - pep talking myself, trying to remember where to find the bread, and texting my friend for support...

Once inside, all was well until I needed to remember whether we buy organic bananas or regular ones.  Turns out, I bought organic.  Turns out, we do buy that kind.  Turns out, first decision was a good one.

I headed to the deli and ordered a half-pound of sliced ham, well actually I stood awkwardly at the deli and wondered whether I was supposed to ring a bell or do a dance or just generally how to communicate to the nice man behind the counter what I wanted.  I tried to say which meat I wanted, but just grunted and pointed, and he said "the smoked Virginia ham?"  I'm not kidding.  I actually just grunted.  He got the point and gave me a half-pound of it.  He was printing the label and sealing the bag when I decided that I needed a pound instead.  Note to self: when changing the amount at the deli counter, its best to do it before the order is finished.

I couldn't remember where most things were, so I circled around and around the store, which would've been fine except that I continued to run into this very awkwardly friendly looking man.  Also would've been fine except that he had only one leg.  The other one was a prosthetic.  And he was wearing shorts.  Have I mentioned that I don't know how to behave in public anymore?  I stared.  Then I tried not to stare at his leg, so I stared straight into his face.  For too long.  He looked away and I found myself staring at the cans of tuna.  Not kidding.  Tuna.  And tuna was not on my list.  This same stare-down happened exactly 7 times.  Really, 7, I counted.

I made it through my list and checked out.  I rewarded myself with a York Peppermint Patty.  Its only fair.  Then that sweet sweet sweeeeeet old man was the bagger for my groceries.  You North Dillons shoppers know him.  He has very deep dark skin, looks like he's about 80, has an accent, and the kindest  face you'll ever ever ever see.  Walking with him to my van was a better reward than the peppermint patty.  He's one of those dear people whose soul just radiates and I feel lucky to be near him.  This is turning out to be a crazy long post, but the short version of what happened next is that I pointed him to the wrong van, a balloon flew out of our trunk and I couldn't convince him that it wasn't his fault, he tried to talk to me and I couldn't understand a word he was saying, and I spent our few minutes together trying to resist the urge to hug him.  I was successful.  But in hindsight, I think I should've just hugged him.

But the bottom line is I made it through Dillons without a breakdown or explosion and am no worse for the wear.

In other news, Ryan spent the last two days tiling our back entry.  Whenever my brother in law Daniel is here, we find a project like that b/c he's just an all-around extremely handy guy.  It took forever but it looks amazing, and now we don't have to have a coniption whenever someone comes in the back door about them needing to take off their shoes.
Daniel and Isaac hard at work...Isaac might need glasses?
If you're wondering how I can continue to blog when I have a newborn, look below.  They're going on an hour in this position.  Beautiful.

Cocktails and Paninis

Cocktail Hour means something new now.
It happens at 7 am at my house now, and consists of 4 pretty pills...
colace (b/c I just had a csection!  geez!)
prozac (b/c I had post-partum depression after River. I'm not waiting around to see if it strikes this time.)
ibuprofin (did I mention I just had a csection?)
and a multivitamin (b/c I never could get those things down when I was prego and I am now making up for lost time.  Maybe she'll get the vitamins by osmosis or simple good intentions?)

Ahhhh...cocktail hour....

And a new panini recipe.  Try this.  Its insane.  So so so delish.

raisin bread brushed with walnut oil
green apple slices
sliced brie
drizzled with caramel icecream topping

It counts as lunch.

Soundtrack

My friend Allison sent me a mix cd while I was on bedrest.
I've been listening to it 24/7 since...it's becoming the soundtrack to Sage's infancy.
Its full of beautiful songs that are so full of soul and so gloriously free of sap.
For those of you looking for new music (that's you, Ana!), download some of these songs:

Stick By You by Andrew Lipke
We Are Okay by Joshua Radin
Rise by Eddie Vedder
Friend Like You by Joshual Radin
Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap
Heavenly Day by Patty Griffin
Sage by Al Jewer
World on a String by Ashley Chambliss

Green Toes

"I'm a hard workin' man, Mama!"
This week brought a few discoveries:

* If Victoria's Secret sold mesh panties, I would buy stock in the company.

* Whoever invented Lilly Pads deserves the Nobel Prize.  (Thank you, Lisa!)  If you're about to have a baby, might have a baby someday, or just know someone who is still fertile, ask me - I'll tell you what they are and convince you to get some.

* When Ryan wears his old blue flannel pj pants to bed, River AND Sage sleep through the night.

* It's good that my narcotic prescription doesn't have refills.  Those little pills are bliss.

* Dr. Harkins said I can have more babies.  I'm already excited about that.  Does that mean I'm just a tad crazy and irrational?

* Everything tastes better when Megan makes it.

* Shit happens.  So do miracles.  Betsy Kate, I love you!

Nanny

This photo was from 7:15 this morning.  A time of day at which in my previous life I would rather be dead than awake.  But I have a kindergardener who rises v.e.r.y.  s.l.o.w.l.y.  in the morning.  She needs about 11/2 hours to drag herself up, get dressed, eat lucky charms (yes, I bribe her to the table with sugar cereal), put on shoes, and brush teeth and hair.  This morning, however, she was in unusually good spirits and we fit in four whole rounds of tic-tac-toe.

I thought maybe the successful morning was due to the fact that I'm such an amazing mom.  Then I watched her walk to school, stop and lean against the tree just down the block, remove her socks (that I had forced her to wear b/c its 43 degrees outside), put them in her backpack, slip back on her extra sparkly extra cool glitter shoes, and continue walking to school.  I stand corrected.  My daughter has a mind of her own.  Its up to me to get out of the way.

My sister's sister-in-law, Megan, is our nanny this week.  I always wanted to see what it felt like to say that nanny word...it is pretty, pretty good, thank you!  River generously helped them make chocolate peanut butter cookies.

And Sage is just plain happy.

I'm one happy mama.

Sunday

I'm not yet ready to take my little 6 lb. baby or my hormonal self out to meet the masses, and the rest of the family isn't in the mood to go to church yet again without me...so....

The scene at our house this morning...Eva is playing PBS Kids, Ryan is getting out his tractor collection for River, and Sage is supervising.  And I'm about to take a long, hot shower.
Life is beautiful!

Sunday was on our list of girl names and this is why!

Tractors!
"Buddy Bear" is at our house from Eva's kindergarden class this week...he has to be the most germ infested stuffed animal ever after being carted all over Hesston by kindergardeners for the past 5 months...Sage suggested a bath for Buddy while he stays with us!

Mumford and Sons

Remember how in junior high, everyone had posters on their wall of New Kids on the Block?
My cousin Kara listened to them 24/7 on her walkman.
I didn't catch the NKOTB fever...I guess Joey just never did it for me.

But the boy band obsession must have been lying dormant in me just waiting to spring out because I'm in-love, I mean in-looooooooove with Mumford and Sons.  I open my laptop and it just goes straight to this youtube link because it wants to make my day.  They make me giddy like a 15 year old.

Watch it.  Please?  Pretty please?  Watch it.
And try to get past how pretty the accordian player is and listen to the lyrics.  They're amazing.  EEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!
